Capilla VOT San Francisco, Salamanca, Religious chapel in Salamanca, Spain
The Capilla VOT San Francisco is a chapel in Salamanca with a rectangular layout and a single nave defined by Tuscan arcades and geometric stucco decorations on its vaults. The interior shows a clear architectural order in which these decorative elements structure the space and guide the visitor's eye.
The chapel was built as a meeting place for the Third Order of Saint Francis, a lay movement within the Church. It was later recognized as cultural heritage and received official protection status as Bien de Interés Cultural in 1993.
The interior walls feature paintings from Madrid workshops created in the 17th and 18th centuries, showing scenes from the Passion of Christ. These artworks shape the character of the space and tell religious stories for visitors.
The chapel is located in the historic center of Salamanca and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that it remains an active place of worship with set hours that should be checked before visiting.
The chapel houses four sculptures of Franciscan saints along with numerous religious artworks, many of which returned from the Louvre after Napoleon's defeat. These recovered works are part of a larger pattern of restitution of European cultural property during that period.
