The park stands on the former grounds of the San Francisco El Grande convent and underwent transformation in the early 19th century with 600 poplar trees planted.
The neoplateresque Public Library building within the park maintains a collection of lending books available to the local community.
The park connects to multiple walking routes and provides benches throughout its paths, making it accessible for both residents and visitors.
Every Good Friday since 1615, the park's humilladero hosts the Descent Ceremony in front of the Vera Cruz Chapel.
