Gamazo dock

Gamazo dock is a heritage-protected dry dock in Santander with a rectangular shape that curves into a semicircle at one end. It has an east-facing gate and pump house that controlled water flow during ship repairs.

Construction began in 1884 and finished in 1908, reflecting Santander's transformation into a modern port during the industrial boom. This expansion of port capacity helped the city strengthen its role in regional trade.

The iron entrance gate installed here shows design choices typical of early 20th-century maritime engineering. These details reflect the craftsmanship that went into building port infrastructure during that era.

The dock sits in the San Martin de Bajamar district near the Festival Palace and offers views across Santander Bay. It is easy to walk around and explore the historic port structures from different angles.

A German submarine arrived for repairs in 1918 and stayed in the dock until the end of World War I. This episode made the facility a notable spot in the region's wartime history.
