Edificio Siboney, Expressionist residential building in Puertochico, Santander, Spain.
The Edificio Siboney is an expressionist residential building in Puerto Chico that spans an entire block between Castelar and Juan de la Cosa streets. Its light blue facades feature rounded corners and semicircular balconies that give the structure a distinctive appearance.
The building was constructed between 1931 and 1932 by architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado during a period when traditional styles were giving way to modern movements. Its construction documents the architectural transition happening in Europe during the early 20th century.
The building takes its name from the American transatlantic ship Siboney that sailed between Santander and Cuba, reflecting the city's maritime trade connections. This naming choice shows how important distant ports and overseas commerce were to the local identity.
The complex consists of private residences and is not open to the public inside, so visitors can only view it from the outside. The best view of the entire facade comes from the street or from the Puerto Chico waterfront area.
The structure incorporates nautical design elements such as cylindrical volumes and porthole windows that create a ship-like appearance. These maritime details were a deliberate choice to emphasize its waterfront location and the city's seafaring identity.
