Iglesia de San Mateo

Iglesia de San Mateo is a Gothic church in Jerez de la Frontera featuring a distinctive octagonal tower split into three sections with ornamental banding. Inside, pointed arches and detailed vault work create the structure of the central nave.

Construction began in the late 15th century and continued across generations before completion. The main portal was finished in 1576 and the tower structure was completed 1596, showing how the building evolved over a long period.

The name honors Saint Matthew and its location gives the neighborhood its identity. Inside, visitors can see the carefully crafted wooden elements that reveal how the community used this sacred space over time.

The church is located on Plaza de la Constitución in the town center and is easy to reach on foot. The square provides good reference points, and visitors should walk around to view all sides of the building.

The tabernacle inside combines rare materials such as ebony, tortoiseshell, ivory, and silver in detailed craftsmanship. A painting from the Murillo School adorns this precious piece, revealing the artistic ambitions of the community.
