Bodegas Domecq, Historic winery in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Bodegas Domecq is a winery in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia known for its sherry production and spread across several historic buildings and courtyards. The complex includes long storage halls with thick walls where rows of oak casks rest in cool darkness.
An Irish merchant founded the winery in 1730 and later sold it to a French family who ran it for nearly two centuries. The business grew during the 19th century into one of the largest sherry houses in the region.
The name Domecq comes from the French-Spanish family who ran the estate from the 19th century and whose architecture shows typical Andalusian courtyards with columned galleries. Visitors today still see the high vaulted cellars where sherry casks are stacked in several tiers following old tradition.
Guided visits offer access to the vaulted cellars and end with a tasting of four regional wine styles. The complex sits on the edge of the old town and can be reached on foot from the center.
In one of the halls the winery combines wine tastings with performances of horse dancing and flamenco in a single evening program. The combination shows three Andalusian traditions at once under one roof.
