Punta Delgada Lighthouse

Punta Delgada Lighthouse is a cylindrical tower on Spain's Alegranza island with a total height reaching about 32 meters when measuring from ground to light source. The structure serves the Chinijo Archipelago navigation system and emits flash patterns to guide vessels through the waters.

Engineer Juan de León y Castillo designed this lighthouse in 1861 as part of the early navigation network for the Canary Islands. It represented one of the first structures built to improve safety for vessels traveling through this remote archipelago.

The white stone structure stands on a rocky island with a plain, sturdy design built to withstand harsh coastal conditions. This simple architecture shows how keepers and their families lived and worked in isolation for decades.

The site sits on a remote island best reached by boat from the larger nearby islands with regular ferry connections. Weather conditions can be windy and exposed, so visitors should bring protective clothing and exercise caution on the rocky terrain.

The facility includes a specialized water collection system that gathers runoff from mountain slopes to supplement fresh water supply on the island. This ingenious solution was essential because rainfall alone proved insufficient for the keepers and their families living in this isolated location.
