Iglesia de Santiago, Cigales

The Iglesia de Santiago is a Renaissance church with three naves of equal height separated by cylindrical pillars, with the central nave being wider than the side ones. The interior feels open and spacious, with the eye naturally drawn toward the altar.

Construction began in 1535 under architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañon and continued through different phases until completion in 1772. This extended building process reflected the economic and social changes the region experienced over time.

The main altar features a baroque retable with detailed reliefs of Saint James, surrounded by sculptures of Saint Peter and Paul. These representations reflect the religious focus that mattered to the local community over centuries.

Tours can be arranged in advance through the local tourism office to ensure access. It is helpful to contact ahead to confirm when the church is open for visitors.

Inside stands the San Juan chapel, designed in 1614, housing a well-preserved Renaissance retable dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. This smaller devotional space reveals a different artistic period and offers an intimate contrast to the grand main altar.
