Castle of Trigueros del Valle, 15th century castle in Trigueros del Valle, Spain
The Castle of Trigueros del Valle is a 15th-century fortification in Valladolid Province featuring underground vaulted stables and a defensive tower. The tower contains a large embrasure and corridors running through its walls.
The fortress underwent major reconstruction in 1453 under Gutierre de Robles and María de Guevara, whose coats of arms remain above the entrance. It later faced assault during the Revolt of the Comuneros when residents attacked the castle in response to its owner Fernan de Robles' harsh rule.
The castle holds a permanent exhibition called 'El Castillo Encantado', created by sculptor Juan Villa, featuring dragons, mermaids, unicorns, and art from different cultures. This collection reflects the artistic vision that transformed the fortress into a gallery space.
Access involves navigating multiple rooms including underground sections, with guided tours available through the restored interior spaces. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths are uneven and some areas have low clearance.
Artist Juan Villa personally created the collection, transforming the castle into a working art studio where mythical figures and sculptures were installed directly within the historic spaces. This unusual blend of medieval architecture and contemporary art installation creates an unexpected visitor experience.
