Church of Santa María de la Asunción, Dueñas

The Church of Santa María de la Asunción is a church building with a monumental structure and an impressive bell tower. Its design combines Gothic and Romanesque elements throughout its construction and exterior appearance.

Construction of this church began in the late 12th century during a period of significant architectural change in Europe. This phase marked the transition from Romanesque to Gothic building styles.

The main altar holds the tombs of the noble Acuña family and displays Hispanic-Flemish artworks that represent regional artistic traditions. These pieces show the craftsmanship and artistic taste of the period.

The building opens its doors especially during peak seasons, particularly during Holy Week and summer months. Access is arranged through an agreement with the Diocese of Palencia.

This place was the site of the baptism of Isabella of Aragon, the firstborn of the Catholic Monarchs, in 1470. The building later received visits from King Charles I and King Philip II.
