The church displays a late Gothic architectural design with Renaissance elements, including a classical facade with paired Corinthian columns across three vertical sections.
Construction began in 1533 under architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, and after his death in 1577, Alonso de Tolosa completed the building with the main facade.
The church holds religious ceremonies and houses a Baroque organ from the early 18th century, reflecting the musical traditions of Spanish religious architecture.
The interior features side chapels with niches containing images and small altarpieces, while the main altar displays scenes from Saint James's life.
The church ceiling contains decorative vaults and Baroque domes from 1672, incorporating pilgrim shell symbols and other imagery associated with Saint James.
