Hermandad de la Expiración, Catholic confraternity in Jaén, Spain.
The Hermandad de la Expiración is a Catholic confraternity based at San Juan Bautista Church in Jaén. Its members organize religious processions during Holy Week that move through the city's historic streets with religious sculptures and ceremonial dress.
The confraternity was established in 1761 at the Royal Convent of Saint Francis of Assisi and received royal recognition from King Alfonso XIII in 1917. This official approval helped solidify its standing within the religious community of Jaén.
The brotherhood displays the Cristo de la Expiración sculpture from 1761, along with María Santísima de las Siete Palabras and San Juan Evangelista statues.
The processions take place during Holy Week, primarily on Holy Thursday, traveling through the central streets of Jaén. To view them, arrive early and find a spot along the procession route since crowds gather to watch.
The bearers perform a specific maneuver called 'paso a tierra' during entry and exit because the Gothic door of the church is unusually narrow. This movement requires careful coordination to pass the large religious sculptures through the tight opening.
