Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is a baroque church in the historic center of Sanlúcar de Barrameda featuring three naves and an octagonal apse. The interior displays proto-baroque architectural style with a rectangular footprint that creates a structured and versatile space.

The church was built in the early 17th century as part of a monastery belonging to the Mercedarian Order, which focused on freeing Christian captives. Archaeological excavations revealed remnants of an earlier Nasrid mosque beneath its foundations from the Islamic period.

The church now functions as a performance venue and hosts the city's annual music festival throughout the year. Visitors experience a blend of sacred space and contemporary cultural activities.
