Iglesia del Carmen de Abajo, Catholic church in Salamanca, Spain

The Iglesia del Carmen de Abajo is a church in Salamanca featuring a single rectangular nave with a sloped roof and a circular lantern at its center. The structure follows baroque classicist design principles and displays a clear, functional interior layout.

The building was constructed between 1760 and 1773 following architect Lucas Ferro Caveiro's designs. It later underwent expansion in 1867 when Baltasar Ferreiro added a new presbytery section.

The church takes its name from the Carmelite order and features a notable sculptural composition in its altar area depicting the Virgin presenting the scapular to Saint Simon Stock. This religious artwork shapes the spiritual character of the interior space and reflects the deep connection to Carmelite traditions.

The building sits at the intersection of Paseo del Empecinado and Calle del Carmen, making it easy to locate. Regular worship services occur and visitors are welcome throughout the week.

A formerly connected Carmelite convent was where Saint John of the Cross once lived, commemorated by a plaque on the facade installed in 1991. This marker notes the 400th anniversary of his death and links the place to a notable religious figure.
