Museo de Art Nouveau y Art Déco, Decorative arts museum in Salamanca, Spain
The Museo de Art Nouveau y Art Déco is a museum in Salamanca housed in a glass and iron building, displaying decorative art objects from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its exhibition spaces are spread across several levels and present jewelry, porcelain, glass, sculpture, and furniture in a connected sequence.
The building was constructed in 1905 as a private residence and remained in private use for decades. It opened as a museum in 1995, when a large private collection of decorative arts was made accessible to the public.
The collection brings together works by makers like Lalique, Gallé, and Tiffany, whose names are closely tied to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Walking through the rooms, you can see how jewelry, porcelain, and glass from that period share a common visual language.
The rooms vary in size and the staircases between floors are narrow, so it is worth allowing enough time to move through comfortably. Visitors who want to see all the collections without feeling rushed should avoid planning a tight visit.
The atrium ceiling is made from more than 2,000 colored glass pieces that filter light in an unusual way throughout the day. This type of glass canopy was rare even when the building was constructed, and few examples from private Spanish residences of that era have survived.
