Mercado de la Paz, Madrid, Indoor market in Salamanca district, Madrid, Spain
Mercado de la Paz is an indoor marketplace in the Salamanca district with approximately 70 stalls selling fresh produce, meats, seafood, and regional specialties. The stalls are arranged within two lateral galleries that open to four different street entrances.
This marketplace opened in 1879 as the final municipal market built in Madrid during the 19th century. It underwent substantial renovation in the 1940s that transformed its internal spaces.
This market remains a daily gathering place where neighbors select ingredients and chat with vendors in a way that shapes local neighborhood life. The routine interactions here reflect how residents in Salamanca continue to depend on personal connections for their shopping.
The main entrance on Claudio Coello Street requires climbing 17 steps, but alternative access is available through Ayala and Lagasca streets. Card payments are accepted throughout the market for convenient transactions.
The market survived closure due to efforts by local traders who fought to keep it operating as one of only two extensively renovated historic markets still active in Madrid. This community dedication allowed the place to continue serving residents in its original way.
