Mezquita Aljama de Algeciras, Medieval mosque ruins in Algeciras, Spain.
The mosque remains display three preserved walls and an ablution courtyard well integrated within the gardens of Hotel Reina Cristina.
Built during the late 8th century under Abderrahman I's rule, the mosque structure replaced a previous Byzantine church or pagan temple.
The mosque site demonstrates the architectural transition from Islamic to Christian use, as it became Santa Maria de la Palma Cathedral in 1344.
The archaeological site stands at coordinates 36.123486, -5.445511 in southern Spain, within the grounds of a modern hotel property.
After Viking raiders burned the mosque in 859, local residents rebuilt it using wood from captured Viking longships for doors and beams.
