The mosque was built in the late 8th century under the rule of Abderrahman I. It replaced an earlier structure that had served as a Byzantine church or pagan temple.

After a raid by Vikings in 859, the mosque was rebuilt by the local community. They used timber from captured Viking ships for doors and beams.
