Palacio de Chiloeches, Santoña

The Palacio de Chiloeches is a three-story stone building with an L-shaped layout in central Santoña. The facade features ornate corner shields and carved heraldic emblems in the upper section, which distinguish it from the simpler neighboring structures.

The building was constructed in the early 1700s under Antonio Ortiz de Santelices, the Marquis of Chiloeches. After serving as a private residence, it later underwent military use and experienced significant changes to its purpose during the Spanish Civil War.

The stone shields and heraldic carvings on the facade show how noble families displayed their connections and rank through architecture. Visitors can still see these refined details, which reflect the pride of its original owners.

The building stands in central Santoña and is surrounded by nearby restaurants and accommodations. Since the palace remains privately owned, visitors should check if exterior viewing is possible before making a trip to the location.

The building underwent multiple transformations in its purpose: from a noble residence to a military hospital and later to a prison. This eventful history is reflected in how its use changed according to the political and social conditions of different periods.
