Reserva Natural Especial del Malpaís de la Rasca

The Reserva Natural Especial del Malpaís de la Rasca is a protected nature reserve featuring expansive volcanic landscapes with three volcanic cones along the southern coast of Tenerife. The terrain is dominated by ancient lava flows with a lighthouse standing at the coastal point marking the reserve's boundary.

The area was officially protected as a Special Nature Reserve in 1994 to safeguard its geological formations and native plant communities. This designation also aimed to shield the diverse bird populations that depend on this coastal habitat.

Archaeological remains scattered across the reserve tell the story of early inhabitants who made their homes here centuries ago. The traces of dwellings and pottery reveal how people once adapted to this harsh volcanic landscape.

The reserve offers marked trails throughout its terrain, making it easy for visitors to navigate and explore at their own pace. Parking is available at the entrance, and it's advisable to visit during cooler morning or late afternoon hours given the exposed, shadeless landscape.

The reserve harbors specialized plant species adapted to extremely salty coastal conditions that are found nowhere else in the region. These rare plants grow directly along the shoreline and display remarkable survival strategies in this harsh environment.
