Montaña Amarilla, Natural monument in southern Tenerife, Spain.
Montaña Amarilla is a volcanic cone near Costa del Silencio on Tenerife's southern shore. The formation features distinctly yellow-tinted rocks created by submarine volcanic activity, making it visually striking against the surrounding terrain.
The site was formed through phreatomagmatic eruptions occurring beneath the ocean surface, which shaped its distinctive cone and coloration. Protection status was granted in the 1990s to preserve this geological formation.
Local fishermen and early island inhabitants utilized the coastal area around Montaña Amarilla for maritime activities and resource gathering throughout generations.
The site is best accessed via the TF-1 highway using the Las Chafiras exit, then following TF-655 toward the coastal area where markers guide visitors. The route is straightforward and clearly signposted from the main road.
The formation contains a rare fossil dune embedded within lava structures, exposed through continuous marine erosion over time. This unusual geological combination makes it scientifically noteworthy and visually interesting.
