Plaza de Santo Domingo, Pedestrian square in central Murcia, Spain

The plaza de Santo Domingo is a pedestrian square in the center of Murcia, paved with cobblestones and dotted with palm trees and planted beds. Several streets meet here, including Calle Trapería and Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio, making it a natural crossroads in the old part of the city.

The square was once called the plaza del Mercado and lay outside the city walls, near a gate where markets and fairs took place. Over the centuries it grew into the urban hub it is today and was eventually listed as a site of historical interest.

The plaza de Santo Domingo is a gathering spot in the heart of Murcia, where people sit on wooden benches or walk the cobbled lanes. In summer, the terraces of nearby bars and restaurants fill up, and the daily rhythm of the city plays out openly here.

The square is fully closed to traffic and easy to reach on foot from several directions in the city center. A visit works well in the early morning or late afternoon, when the space is less crowded and the light is pleasant.

At the center of the square stands a ficus planted in 1893, roughly 82 feet (25 meters) tall. At its base is a bust of the engineer Ricardo Codorniú, who worked to bring more trees to the city and became known as the apostle of the tree.
