Torre del Infantado, Medieval fortified tower in Potes, Spain.

The Torre del Infantado is a fortified tower in Potes featuring four levels of stone walls, corner towers, crenellations, and a central courtyard that lights the interior spaces. The structure spans multiple floors and now houses exhibition spaces where visitors can explore medieval history and architecture.

The tower was built in the 14th century for the de la Lama family and later became the residence of the Marquis of Santillana and the Dukes of Infantado. Its evolution reflects the changing power of different noble families in the region.

The tower displays works by Beato de Liébana, home to one of the largest collections of medieval manuscripts focused on the Apocalypse. These writings continue to shape how the region understands its religious past.

Access to the tower is through the center of Potes, a small town easily explored on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the interior staircases are steep and the floors are made of stone.

The tower's central courtyard features Italian Renaissance design elements, setting it apart from other Cantabrian fortifications. This unusual blend shows how medieval and early Renaissance styles converged in this northern Spanish region.
