Woermann Tower, Mixed-use skyscraper in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain
The Woermann Tower is a modern 18-story building standing approximately 76 meters tall in Las Palmas. It combines residential apartments, ground-floor retail spaces, and a public library, all wrapped in a glass exterior decorated with plant-inspired etchings.
The tower was completed in April 2005 through collaboration between architectural firm Abalos & Herreros and designers Joaquin Casariego and Elsa Guerra. The building emerged as part of the city's early 2000s modernization efforts and established itself as a landmark of contemporary design.
The public library on the ground floor serves as a gathering space for visitors and locals seeking reading areas. The adjacent square with Portuguese stonework creates an open gathering area that draws people outside.
The structure sits along the coast with clear ocean views from various levels throughout the building. Visitors can access public areas like the library and retail spaces easily through the main entrance on the ground floor.
The facade features horizontal solar fins that control sunlight while generating energy for the building. This engineering approach allows the structure to help meet its own power needs through renewable generation.
