Poema del Mar Aquarium, Public aquarium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain
Poema del Mar Aquarium is a public facility in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria housing 35 marine and river environments arranged across three zones: Jungle, Reef, and Deep Ocean. More than 550 different animal species inhabit these recreated habitats.
The facility opened on December 17, 2017, marking a significant advance in marine exhibition standards for the Canary Islands. It was designed with contemporary approaches to animal welfare and environmental responsibility.
The name references painter Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre's collection titled Poema del Atlántico, honoring the region's maritime past. This connection to local heritage becomes tangible as you move through the exhibition spaces.
The facility is located on Muelle Sanapú pier near the El Muelle shopping center and welcomes visitors throughout the day. Plan to spend several hours exploring the different zones, especially if you want to observe the animals during their active periods.
The building features a massive curved acrylic viewing panel measuring 36 meters (118 feet) in length and 7 meters (23 feet) in height. This enormous transparent element lets visitors watch large schools of fish and marine creatures moving naturally without optical distortion from the material.
