Ses Feixes Wetlands, Agricultural wetlands in Ibiza Town, Spain.
Ses Feixes Wetlands is an agricultural wetland area that curves around Ibiza bay, extending from Ibiza Town to Talamanca Beach. The site divides into roughly 164 small plots crossed by underground drainage channels that kept soil moist for growing vegetables.
Moorish occupants built a network of cisterns, reservoirs, and irrigation channels that transformed the land into farmland. This advanced water system enabled generations of farmers to work the wetlands until the 20th century.
The narrow farm plots here reflect traditional irrigation methods that fed local families for centuries. This way of life faded in the 1950s, yet the landscape still carries marks of that agricultural heritage.
The wetland is best explored by walking along the paths between plots, which are generally accessible to visitors. Wear suitable footwear since ground conditions change with the season and water levels can vary.
The entrance gates called Compuertas not only managed water flow but also display design elements resembling ancient Egyptian structures. This connection between two distant cultures remains one of the most intriguing aspects of these waterworks.
