Designation of Origin Pla de Bages

Located 50 kilometers northwest of Barcelona, Pla de Bages extends across 27 municipalities with vineyards at altitudes between 200 and 500 meters above sea level.

The region's wine production dates back to Roman times, with evidence suggesting a settlement named Bacassis existed, potentially referring to Bacchus, the wine deity.

Medieval Benedictine monks from Sant Benet de Bages monastery contributed extensively to developing wine-making techniques and expanding vineyard cultivation throughout the region.

The designation permits various grape varieties including Mandó, Sumoll, Picapoll Negre for reds and Macabeu, Parellada, Picapoll Blanc for whites, with densities of 2,000 to 4,500 vines per hectare.

The Mediterranean climate with continental influences creates specific temperature variations between day and night, leading to complex flavor development in the grapes.
