Teatro de la Comedia, Classical theatre in Príncipe Street, Madrid, Spain.
Teatro de la Comedia is a theatre on Príncipe Street in Madrid with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium spanning three tiers and featuring twelve boxes per floor. Decorative arches in Arab-inspired style mark its interior, along with a smaller performance space on the upper level.
The building was constructed in 1874 by architect Agustín Ortiz de Villajos and later faced structural damage from fire. A major reconstruction in 1915 restored and reshaped the interior that visitors see today.
The theatre hosts the National Classical Theatre Company, which stages works from Spain's Golden Age alongside contemporary plays. Visitors experience living Spanish theatrical tradition throughout the season.
The main auditorium seats approximately 500 people, with an additional performance space in the upper floors for smaller productions. Wheelchair access is available throughout, making the venue accessible to all visitors.
The balustrades feature playful decorations with playing card symbols and musical instruments, reflecting the original owner's background. These overlooked details give the theatre an unexpected personality beyond its classical purpose.
