Escola Gitanjali, Art Nouveau school in Badalona, Spain
The Escola Gitanjali is a school building in Badalona designed in Catalan modernism and Art Nouveau style. It features three levels including a semi-basement, ground floor, and upper story, with asymmetrical volumes and extended balconies that define its appearance.
Construction of the building began in 1908 when Leonard Le Prevost requested the permit, establishing it as a modernist school structure. A major expansion by Joan Padrós i Fornaguera in 1946 converted the building into two separate residential units.
The school's name comes from Rabindranath Tagore's poetry collection, reflecting the founders' admiration for the Indian poet's work. This choice connects the local institution with a global literary tradition and reveals the international influences that shaped the educational project.
The school building is located at Avinguda Marti Pujol 37-41 in Badalona, positioned on a main avenue for easy access. The structure displays protective window grilles, and its various facilities are distributed across multiple levels throughout the building.
The Teachers' Cooperative of the school completed a remarkable transformation in 1986 when the private institution became a public facility. This shift reflects the community's commitment to education and open access for all students.
