Can Casacuberta, Modernist industrial building and central library in Badalona, Spain
Can Casacuberta is a Catalan modernist industrial building in Badalona that now functions as the city's central library. The building features cast iron columns supporting asymmetrical trusses and a sawtooth roof that brings natural light into the approximately 4,800 square meter (51,600 square foot) interior.
The complex was founded in 1907 as a textile mill owned by Josep Giró and later underwent a transformation to serve as a public library. It opened as the central library in 1992.
The space houses Espai Betúlia, a center dedicated to promoting literature and written culture. Visitors will find thematic collections focused on magic history, anarchist movements, and Catalan books.
The location is easy to explore on foot and operates as the main library serving several neighborhoods. Access is straightforward, and visitors can move through the spaces without difficulty.
The structure combines traditional Catalan vaulting techniques with modern design elements into an innovative form. This combination earned the building the FAD architecture prize in 1991.
