Badalona, Mediterranean coastal city in Barcelona province, Spain
Badalona is a Mediterranean city in the northeast of the Barcelona metropolitan area, stretching along several kilometers of coastline. Residential neighborhoods reach from the beach to gentle hills inland, crossed by wide streets and smaller lanes.
Roman settlers founded a colony here in the first century before Christ, which later grew through wine trade. In medieval times a monastery arose on a nearby hill, attracting travelers and pilgrims.
The name comes from Roman times, when this place was called Baetulo. Along the waterfront promenade locals meet for walks, while in the old quarter small workshops and markets show daily life.
Train and bus connect this city to the center of Barcelona in a few minutes. The beaches are close to residential areas, so walks between coast and old quarter are easy on foot.
Beneath a museum in the center lie remains of Roman baths and houses, which visitors can view from above through glass floors. Archaeologists also discovered mosaics and everyday objects from antiquity there.
