Barca Bridge, Deck arch bridge between Pontevedra and Poio, Spain
Barca Bridge is a deck arch bridge crossing the Lérez River between Pontevedra and Poio. The main span features a 72-meter reinforced concrete arch with smaller supporting structures at each end.
An original metal bridge was built in 1894 and later underwent major reconstruction starting in 1945. Architect Eduardo Torroja Miret redesigned the structure with a concrete arch that was completed in 1950.
The bridge stands near the Portuguese Route of the Ways of St James, connecting the regions where Benedictine monks controlled river crossings since 1197.
The bridge carries two lanes of vehicle traffic on a 13-meter-wide roadway. Pedestrians can use covered walkways that provide shelter during rainy weather.
Before the current bridge was built, this crossing point was controlled by the Society of Seamen of Pontevedra. The disputes over management eventually prompted local interests to establish a society dedicated to building the bridge.
