Caldas de Reis Hoard

The Caldas de Reis Hoard is a collection of forty-one Bronze Age gold objects including rings, bowls, jugs, and decorated plate fragments. These pieces are housed in the Sarmiento Building at Pontevedra Museum, displayed on the first floor.

Farmers discovered this collection during fieldwork in the 1940s, with the original assemblage weighing about 25 kilograms of gold. It dates to the Bronze Age, a period when metalworking flourished in the region.

The metalwork shows advanced goldsmithing skills that existed in northwestern Spain during prehistoric times. Visitors can observe how these early craftspeople created objects with sophisticated techniques and designs.

The collection is located on the first floor of the Sarmiento Building and is easily accessible to visitors. The modest number of objects allows you to examine all of them during a brief visit.

A gold comb in the collection features fine incised patterns that resemble those found on bone or wooden tools from the same period. This reveals how artisans translated designs from one material to another.
