San Bartolomé Church, Baroque church in Pontevedra, Spain
San Bartolomé is a Baroque church in Pontevedra built with three naves arranged in a Latin cross and a stone facade with large Doric columns. The interior space unfolds through these architectural elements, creating a sense of height and structure.
Jesuits built this church between 1695 and 1714 following architectural designs inspired by the Church of Gesù in Rome. This design approach was widely copied during the period and shaped many religious buildings across Spain.
Inside you will find sculptures from artists working in the Valladolid and Santiago de Compostela traditions, which shaped religious art across the region. These works reveal how artistic styles traveled and influenced one another during the period.
The church sits on Sarmiento Street near the former Santa Clara gate and is easy to reach on foot. The surrounding area is worth exploring, as the Museum of Pontevedra stands just next to it.
Inside you will find a statue of the Virgen de la O, showing the Virgin Mary during pregnancy. This figure is Pontevedra's patron saint and often goes unnoticed by visitors, even though it holds a significant place within the building.
