Río Eo, Oscos y Terras de Buron, Biosphere reserve in northwest Spain
Río Eo, Oscos y Terras de Burón is a biosphere reserve located in northwest Spain between Galicia and Asturias. It encompasses the estuary where the Eo River meets the coast, forested slopes, coastal basins, and extensive woodlands that support diverse wildlife.
The reserve received UNESCO recognition in 2004 as a biosphere reserve, representing the first protected area jointly managed by both Galicia and Asturias. This cross-regional cooperation was significant in establishing a unified approach to conservation in this area.
The villages within the reserve display traditional architecture typical of northwest Spain, and you can see how local people still depend on farming and livestock for their livelihood. This way of living continues to shape the landscape and the rhythm of daily life in these communities.
The reserve is accessible via the N-634 road from either Oviedo or Lugo, and the Eo River Visitor Centre in Ribadeo provides information to help you understand the area. Stopping at the centre before exploring different parts of the reserve helps you plan your visit better.
The reserve protects specialized wetlands that are recognized under the international Ramsar Convention, providing crucial habitat for rare bird species and plant communities. These marshes and shallow waters attract migratory birds and offer different viewing opportunities depending on the season.
