Calahonda, Tourist beach in Mijas, Spain
Calahonda is a semi-urban beach of golden sand lying between the municipalities of Mijas and Marbella on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Málaga. It runs about 4,400 metres from the Puerto de Cabopino to the Playa de El Bombo, with an average width of roughly 20 metres.
The coastal area transformed from an undeveloped shoreline into a major tourist destination during the late twentieth century development of the Costa del Sol.
The beach lies between the Cabopino marina and El Bombo beach, a stretch shared by Mijas and Marbella. In summer it fills with bathers, and basic services such as showers and toilets are set along its 4,400 metres. The name Calahonda is also used for the adjoining urbanisation.
Lifeguards, showers, and rental equipment for water activities are available, along with convenient access points throughout. Visiting in early morning or late afternoon helps avoid the busiest times.
On clear days, visitors can see both the Rock of Gibraltar and the North African coastline across the Mediterranean from this beach.
