Sakoneta, Remote beach in Deba, Spain

Sakoneta is a shell-shaped beach in the Itxaspe district of Deba, 450 metres long and 15 metres wide, opening between the Aizkaizto headland to the east and Mendata to the west. The near-vertical flysch rises here and runs more than 300 metres into the sea; above it stand Sakonetako Punta or Aizkaizto at 36 metres and Mendatagana at 133 metres. The Sakoneta stream reaches the sea at this point, where the limestone flysch of the Upper Cretaceous meets the black flysch of the Lower Cretaceous.

The flysch at Sakoneta stands almost vertical and runs over 300 metres into the sea. Here the limestone flysch of the Upper Cretaceous meets the black flysch of the Lower Cretaceous. In 1973 Iberduero proposed a nuclear plant in the cove between Aitzuri and Mendata points; popular opposition stopped the project.

Local residents have protected this section of coastline by keeping it undeveloped and free from commercial structures. This care reflects how the community values the spot as a natural part of their coastal identity.

Access is on foot: leave the car at the Balabe car park near Mendatagaina, at the Itsaspe camper area or by the Itxaspe campsite, then follow the GI-5001 short-distance path; the GR-121 long-distance trail passes nearby at Itxaspe Errotaberri. The final approach runs along rural, mostly concrete tracks. The beach is classified as exposed to strong swell and wind, with no services.

A section of the beach is designated for naturists and offers about 35 meters of space between the cliffs and the sea. This special area makes the location welcoming to different types of visitors.
