Hospital de Santa Cruz

The Hospital de Santa Cruz is a significant museum building in historic Toledo, designed with a Greek cross layout and featuring multiple courtyards. It houses art collections spanning archaeology, painting, and decorative arts distributed across multiple levels and spaces.

A cardinal founded this institution in the late 1400s to help vulnerable children, and construction took place over several decades. The building was completed in two building phases and reflects the social importance of the place during the Renaissance.

The building takes its name from the Holy Cross and displays works by El Greco alongside local artistic treasures from different periods. The collections reflect the artistic tradition and craftsmanship of the region.

The art collections are spread across multiple levels, with upper floors reserved for paintings and lower areas displaying archaeological finds. Plan enough time to explore all sections, as the building is larger than it appears from outside.

The entrance portal displays elaborate decoration that merges Moorish influences with Flemish elements, designed by a notable Renaissance architect. This blend of different artistic traditions makes the facade a visual bridge between cultures.
