Puerta del Vado, Medieval city gate in Toledo, Spain
Puerta del Vado is a medieval gate in Toledo with four rounded arch windows on its main facade and combines brick and granite building elements. The structure mixes two different arch styles: an outer semicircular brick arch and an inner horseshoe-shaped granite arch.
The gate was built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries and later became buried underground. Its rediscovery happened during restoration work in 2002.
The gate sits in the San Isidoro district and shows how Toledo changed its architecture through the centuries by combining Islamic and Christian building styles. You can see how different craftsmanship techniques come together in this structure.
The gate sits roughly 9 meters below current ground level and is not easily reached without arrangements. Access typically requires special coordination or a visit as part of a guided tour.
The gate remained completely buried underground for many centuries and escaped demolition and decay. This helped preserve the original structure and craftsmanship in remarkably good condition.
