Oratorio de San Felipe Neri
Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, Baroque oratory in Alcalá de Henares, Spain
The Oratorio de San Felipe Neri is a religious building with red brick walls and late Baroque design that dominates one side of its plaza. An elliptical dome rises above the main altar and forms the most distinctive interior feature.
The building was founded in 1694 and stood as one of the few male convents in the city. French troops looted it in 1811, yet it remained standing and maintained its religious function through subsequent centuries.
The name refers to a saint from Florence known for his work in education and charity. Visitors can still sense the active religious life of the place, as worshippers gather here for daily prayer and spiritual activities.
The building sits on Plaza Padre Lecanda and welcomes visitors during its regular hours. Visitors should dress respectfully and be aware that religious services may be underway during your visit.
A prominent Spanish thinker spent time here between 1888 and 1889 for personal spiritual reflection. This experience led him to write down his thoughts about the city.
