Plaza de los Santos Niños, Alcalá de Henares, Historic square in central Alcalá de Henares, Spain
The Plaza de los Santos Niños is a rectangular open space in the heart of Alcalá de Henares, with stone arcades along its northern edge near the Magistral Cathedral. The space anchors the historic core and provides an open area surrounded by dense medieval streets.
The square took its present shape in 1891 following the demolition of seven two-story buildings that previously occupied the center. This reshaping created a new gathering space that allowed the old city to adapt to modern needs.
The square is named after two young martyrs executed here in ancient times, and their story shapes the local religious identity. The name reflects how this place connects to the spiritual heritage that defines the city.
The area is served by several bus lines and connects directly to Mayor Street, where you will find restaurants and shops. The flat, paved ground is easy to walk on, and the open space provides room to pause and explore the surrounding streets.
Excavations in 2022 uncovered remains of a medieval necropolis and Roman structures buried beneath the current surface. These findings reveal that the ground below holds evidence of occupation across many centuries before the plaza itself was formed.
