David i Goliat, Steel sculpture in Vila Olimpica, Spain
David i Goliat is a monumental steel sculpture featuring a large rectangular mask held up by three twisted supporting legs. The artwork stands in a public plaza and commands attention through its bold geometric form and substantial height.
The sculpture was created in 1992 during Barcelona's preparation for the Olympic Games. It marks the shift from an earlier informal residential area to a modern public space.
The steel mask recalls the displaced residents who once lived in this neighborhood, with its form suggesting their stories carried away by the wind. The sculpture keeps alive the memory of a community that vanished before the Olympic transformation.
The sculpture is easily accessible by metro, taking line L4 to Ciutadella Vila Olimpica station and walking a few minutes from there. The plaza is open during daylight hours and provides plenty of space to walk around and view the artwork from different angles.
The steel structure required specially engineered solutions to withstand strong wind forces and remain stable. Engineers solved the challenge of keeping the oversized mask secure without compromising its artistic impact.
