Somorrostro Beach, Urban beach in La Barceloneta, Spain.
Somorrostro Beach is an urban beach in Barcelona with 114 meters of width and stretches over 500 meters along the coastline. It runs between a historic gasometer structure and the Olympic Marina with sandy shores backed by a promenade.
Until the mid-twentieth century, a coastal settlement with around 15,000 residents existed here in basic living conditions. The community was cleared and transformed to create the modern beach that exists today.
The flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya was born in the former fishing village that once stood here and found her artistic voice in this coastal community. Her legacy remains connected to the neighborhood's identity and its past as a working-class settlement.
The beach has showers, public restrooms, changing facilities, and lounge chairs available throughout the area. Food and beverage kiosks are positioned along the sand and promenade for visitor convenience.
Beneath the beach arcade sits the Centre de la Platja, offering exhibitions about marine life and the city's coastal history. This educational space reveals layers of Barcelona's relationship with the sea that many visitors miss.
