El Peix d'Or, Steel sculpture at Port Olímpic, Barcelona, Spain.
El Peix d'Or, also known as the Golden Fish, is a 35-meter-tall sculpture at Port Olímpic in Barcelona, made from curved stainless steel plates arranged to form the shape of a fish. It stands directly on the seafront promenade, rising high above the surrounding buildings and marina.
Frank Gehry designed the sculpture for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, which served as the starting point for a broad transformation of the waterfront area. The land around Port Olímpic had previously been used for industry and was opened to the public as part of that effort.
The fish shape reflects how deeply Barcelona is tied to the sea and to the life of its port. Locals and visitors tend to gather around the base of the sculpture, making it a natural meeting point along the seafront.
The sculpture is freely accessible from the Passeig Maritim promenade at any time of day and is easy to spot from a distance. Clear days bring out the reflections on the steel surface most vividly, so morning or late afternoon visits tend to offer the best views.
The sculpture was originally conceived as part of a casino project that was never built, and it was only later adapted for its current location at the harbor. What looks like a unified form is actually built from dozens of separate steel panels, each cut and curved individually before being assembled on site.
