Puente Nuevo Reservoir, body of water
Puente Nuevo Reservoir is a large water storage basin in Córdoba where the Río Guadiato is dammed. The basin has a perimeter of approximately 92 kilometers and is surrounded by gentle mountains and natural vegetation.
The reservoir was built from concrete between 1956 and 1973 to store water and generate electricity. When the dam filled, old railroad tracks and roads disappeared under water, while a coal power plant opened in 1966.
The reservoir serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors spend time outdoors on weekends with family and friends. It is woven into the daily rhythm of the Córdoba region as a space where people connect with water and nature.
Visitors can walk around the entire basin and enjoy views of water and mountains. Access is open, but it is wise to wear sturdy shoes and prepare for longer walks around the shoreline.
Submerged railroad tracks and old roads from before the dam was filled lie beneath the water and become visible at certain water levels. These hidden remnants tell the story of the region before it was transformed by this major project.
