Christ of Monteagudo, Religious monument in Murcia, Spain
The Christ of Monteagudo is a concrete statue that stands atop Monteagudo Castle, reaching about 34 meters in total height including its pedestal. The monument towers over the city and is visible from many points across the region.
An original monument from 1926 was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The current statue was built in 1951 and replaces the destroyed original at this historic location.
The statue has become a symbol of the Murcia region and shapes the city's identity. It stands at a location that holds deep meaning for local people, where history and present day meet.
Direct access to the statue is not possible, but there is a viewpoint halfway up the hill from which you can see the monument clearly. This vantage point also offers wide views over the city and is easy to reach.
The hill beneath the statue was a settlement location for different cultures over 5000 years, from the Argorians through the Romans to the Arabs. These overlapping layers of civilizations make the spot a crossroads of history.
