Wonchi, Volcanic mountain with crater lake in Oromia Region, Ethiopia
Wonchi is a volcanic cone in the Oromia Region that rises sharply from the surrounding plateau and contains a sunken crater basin filled with water. The crater walls encircle the lake like a natural fortress, while two islands within hold a monastery and other structures.
The volcano erupted roughly 1000 years ago, shaping the current landscape with its sunken crater basin. Later, the site became religiously significant when a monastery was founded in the 13th century on one of the islands.
The Cherkos Monastery on an island in the lake serves as a spiritual center that draws pilgrims from the region. People visit this place to pray and experience the religious traditions that have remained active here for centuries.
A horseback ride of about one hour descends from the volcano rim to the lakeside, with trails that are generally walkable. Ferry connections link the shore to the islands, providing access to the monastery and other sites across the water.
Within the crater basin, natural hot springs bubble up from the ground and waterfalls cascade down the surrounding walls. These features shift with the seasons, creating different scenes depending on rainfall and water flow.
