Mikontalo, Student dormitory in Hervanta, Finland
Mikontalo is a student housing complex near Tampere University in Finland, made up of four twelve-floor buildings. The complex holds 767 apartments along with shared spaces such as saunas, a gym, and common rooms.
The complex was built between 1978 and 1980 and originally had a warm color scheme of red, orange, and yellow. A major renovation carried out between 2007 and 2009 updated the facilities and added Juliet balconies to the buildings.
In December 2007, students turned the facade of building D into a large light display to play Tetris on it. This event became part of the Mikontalolights festival, which has taken place regularly during winter since then.
The complex is within walking distance of Tampere University, making daily commutes straightforward for residents. Shared facilities such as laundry rooms and saunas are spread across the buildings for convenient access.
After the renovation, the color of the buildings changed from warm red and orange tones to a bluish-grey appearance, giving the whole complex a new look. This shift makes it easy to spot the buildings from a distance against the surrounding neighborhood.
