Isoisänsilta, Steel arch bridge in Kalasatama, Finland
Isoisänsilta is a steel arch bridge in Kalasatama that spans across the water connecting the district to Mustikkamaa island. The structure features a distinctive curved design with a continuous deck that accommodates pedestrian and bicycle traffic between the two areas.
The City of Helsinki held a design competition in 2011 that the engineering firm Pontek won with their innovative proposal. The bridge opened in 2016 and became part of the modern transformation of the harbor district.
The name refers to the Isoisänniemi promontory on the Mustikkamaa side, with Isoisänsilta meaning Grandfather's Bridge in local language. This connection ties the structure to the surrounding landscape and its geographical heritage.
The bridge is easily accessible for pedestrians and cyclists, offering a direct crossing between the two areas. The exposed design and open deck provide clear views, making it straightforward to navigate regardless of direction.
The bridge received the Bridge of the Year award in 2017 from the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers. This recognition celebrated both its technical innovation and structural elegance as a modern engineering achievement.
