Lauttasaari water tower, Water tower in Lauttasaari, Finland
Lauttasaari water tower was a concrete structure with a distinctive mushroom-shaped design that rose 34 meters above the district. The building held water in two separate tanks to ensure reliable supply to the residential area of southern Helsinki.
Construction began in 1958 as part of Helsinki's expansion of water infrastructure across the city. Operations ceased in 1996 and the structure was demolished completely in 2015.
The tower marked the first mushroom-shaped water facility in Finland, introducing a new architectural approach to municipal water storage construction.
The site was located in a residential neighborhood in southern Helsinki and could be reached via various routes through the district. Once it stopped operating, public access became limited as the building was eventually decommissioned.
After ceasing water storage operations, the building found a second purpose as a platform for telecommunications antennas. This extended the structure's usefulness to the city before it was eventually removed from the landscape.
