Kärnänkoski

Kärnänkoski are rapids located between Lake Kolima and Kärnänjärvi, where water flows continuously through the riverbed. The rapids stretch for several hundred meters and display the force of moving water as it passes through this landscape.

The location became home to a hydroelectric power station in the 1950s that operated for decades at the site. The power plant was later shut down after operational concerns arose.

The rapids can be reached through local roads leading to Viitasaari without entrance fees. Visitors should be aware that fishing in the area is regulated with specific quotas and rules.

A private bridge crossing the rapids appeared on a Finnish postage stamp in 2014. This honor reflects how the location holds a special place in the country's culture.
